You Learn Something New Every Day

The Black Swallowtail caterpillar has an orange forked gland called the osmeterium.  When in danger, he pops out this gland that looks like a snake's tongue, and releases a distinctive odor to repel predators.  This creature is in a small plexiglass observation habitat that my neighbor started a few days ago.  He gets huge amounts of neighbor points for letting me take the box home!  And just in time, because it's pouring rain out right now and I can't get out there to photograph in the yard.

  1. Your series on caterpillars has been fascinating. Who knew what colourful and intriguing little creatures they are. Did you know all this detail about them or did you have to do research on line? Either way thanks for all your hard work.
