Fifth Instar
An instar is the phase between two periods of molting. The orange spiky caterpillar did indeed turn into a lovely swan--it has left behind the old skin, which it will eventually eat, and will continue to fatten up and become greener until it is ready to form a chrysalis. I feel so blessed to be able to watch this life unfold, and to match my photos to articles on the net and figure out what's going on. If I hadn't been out there weeding a few days ago, I would have missed the whole show. Makes you wonder what else is out there...
