One Flower at a Time
There are so many colors in the garden, and they are so beautiful, alone and in juxtaposition to one another, that sometimes I almost can't stand it and have to look away. I have been trying for years to make a picture of the whole yard in all it's magnificence: all the colors, all the shapes and smells, all the ways everything bounces off everything else, and different at every time of day. The best I can do is one or two flowers at a time, and even this can't tell you how I stop in my tracks whenever I pass this corner, how this particular dark purple against the pale yellow just makes me want to sing, or weep.

Those colours are just heavenly together. Whenever I see a deep purple like this I am reminded why the Ancient Romans reserved this colour for their emperors. It is difficult to take a picture that embraces the whole garden and the more beautiful it is, the more difficult. Sometimes I think that a single flower like this speaks more eloquently for the whole garden.
