Chrysalis

Sometime while I was having breakfast, the caterpillar molted for the last time, shrugging off his colorful pointy skin which now lies at the bottom of the box like an old crumpled dirty sweatshirt.  And now the chrysalis--I haven't the slightest idea how this is happening, but the new skin is hardening in increments from the head up toward the tail; there are beautiful patterns visible in this shell, which so far has taken about twelve hours to form.
