I don't even remember why I was out in the yard early this morning. I think I was checking on the tiny spinach seedlings that I keep under an old window screen to protect them from the neighborhood cats. It had rained a bit in the night and we'd been discussing whether or not to go for a walk; I was supposed to be taking a shower and getting ready to go out. But there I was all morning-muddled in my blue fleece robe, somewhat aimlessly rounding the path by the pear tree, when I was brought to full attention: our one remaining asparagus plant had been flattened by the brief storm and it's long feathery stalks were embellished with hundreds and hundreds of sparkling drops. It was the most beautiful show-stopping gift, just glowing against the fallen leaves. What fun I had crawling around in the wet mess and watching the rainbow play of the sun as it came and went behind the dark clouds and lit the water in sudden spurts. I am so grateful that I know there is time for such distraction.
