Autobiography

When I was in my thirties and could finally afford a set of matching dishes without any chips or cracks, my mother told me food looked more appetizing on white plates. Oddly enough, her own Good Dishes, the ones I ate from on special occasions throughout my childhood, were not white at all, but dusky earth colors.  And here are travel souvenirs, wedding presents, gifts of all kinds.  Handpainted pottery and mass-produced messages.  Blue and white bowls from Mexico, to serve hot chocolate exactly the way they did in the open-air market.  The mug I painted for my husband one Christmas.  A salad bowl we've used for over 25 years.  Espresso cups, glass cups, commemorative cups of all kinds.  Coffee bowls, soup bowls, ice cream bowls.  And, although you can't see them, dessert plates rimmed with blue and gold stars.
